Kansas Governor Declares State of Disaster Emergency Ahead of Severe Weather

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has declared a state of disaster emergency in anticipation of severe weather expected to affect the state on Monday. The proclamation aims to empower emergency managers statewide to prepare their personnel and resources for the impending storms.

“With severe weather looming, Kansans are advised to postpone outdoor activities and stay informed about local weather conditions through NOAA weather radio or local TV and radio stations,” Governor Kelly stated in a release. “In the event of a warning, it’s crucial to seek shelter immediately and continue to monitor weather updates for guidance.”

Forecasters predict scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms moving across the region later today, particularly across southern Kansas. These storms could produce large hail ranging from baseball to softball size, damaging winds up to 80 mph, and tornadoes, with some potentially strong and long-track tornadoes possible before 11 p.m.

To support response efforts, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management will activate the State Emergency Operations Center at a Level 2 (Partial) starting at 2 p.m. This activation will facilitate continuous monitoring of the weather situation and coordination with county emergency managers to provide assistance as needed.
