Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former Tripura minister Sudip Roy Barman on Sunday alleged that only “scapegoats” were arrested over the murder of a community club secretary last week near Agartala while the real culprits were roaming scot-free.
As he called the arrests an “eyewash”, Barman, co-convener of the Opposition INDIA Bloc in Tripura, said the real offenders in the crime had links with BJP leaders and a section of the police force.
Durga Prasanna Deb alias Viki Deb, secretary of Bharat Ratna Sangha, one of the biggest social clubs of the state, was shot dead at point-blank range inside his car near the Border Security Force (BSF) headquarters at Shalbagan in the outskirts of Agartala on April 30.
In the preliminary investigation so far, the police have found that enmity between two groups of the club led to the murder. The police arrested a former president of Bharat Ratna Sangha, Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury, 65, and one Sushmita Sarkar, 22, over their alleged connection to the murder. Sources suggested that the rivalry could be related to contract negotiations between groups vying for government tenders from the Central Public Works Department (CWPD).
“The CWPD was there previously, too, but we never saw such murders then. I don’t think the real culprit will be caught. I think all these are happening due to a link between the BJP and a section of the police. The police can arrest the culprit, but they will not do so because they, too, are profit earners”, Barman said.
“Such murders will continue, mothers will lose their sons from their laps, wives will wipe their vermilion. The police will remain silent… You and I will forget… Those who are in administration, the chief minister and the police, unless taking an initiative, it will be a never-ending process”, said Barman, claiming that the victim has had no record of being linked to any mafia groups.
Reacting to the allegations, BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee said the Congress leader should go to the police with any information about the murder if he had it.
“If he has got some relevant information pertaining to the murder, he should go to the cops. He is a citizen of the state and has the responsibility to do his duty to maintain law and order. Why doesn’t he go to the police?” Bhattacharya asked.
